My sweet boy turned 7 last Thursday!

On Saturday, we celebrated with cake from Gourmutt's Bakery (they did a lovely job, as always).

Duncan also got some cookies from his Aunt Mary.

The birthday boy was very patient while we took photos.

Right up until he decided he was ready for the cake, that is.

This year, Duncan decided he was old enough to eat his cake in bed.

As part of his birthday celebration (although the timing could be a coincidence), I decided to start slowly reducing his phenobarb dose. Even with the small reduction, I'm already seeing signs of improvement. He's showing interest in his jolly ball again, and tonight he jumped two in a row four times! Another indication that lowering the dose is a good thing - Duncan put a beat down on Kodiak when the pup snarked at him a little while ago. Duncan had gotten to where he would try to hide from Kodiak rather than stand up for himself. Tonight, though, Duncan obviously remembered that he is the big dog!

Thursday was my sweet girl's 8th birthday and Saturday was party day.

Aunt Mary gave Reyna a brand new basketball! Reyna wasn't too sure about it at first, but after a bit of shaking and gnawing, she decided it was A Good Thing.

And then it was time for cake! As always, the cake from Gourmutt's Bakery received the Pup Seal of Approval.

12/3/2010, Kodiak came into our home as a foster puppy. He never left. I'm so glad he's a part of our family (even when he won't put his ears up for pictures). Happy Gotcha Day, Kodiak!

Birthday Fun

My birthday present from Mary was "Paint Your Pet" night at Wine & Design. The idea with this event is that you send them a photo of your pet, they put it on a canvas, and then you paint it (with help as needed).

I used a photo of Duncan taken in 2009. I didn't do Reyna because a friend of mine who is an actual painter is doing Reyna's portrait for a belated birthday present. Here's the photo blown up for painting (the wrinkles are from adhering the paper to the canvass, not from the actual picture).

I will admit to finding the whole process very stressful. Up until I hit a certain point, anyway. All of a sudden, I was able to relax and just paint without worrying about exactly how it looked. Which is good, cause Duncan has some seriously complicated coloring when you're trying to paint it just right. I joked to Mary that if I ever decided to paint Belle, she'd turn from a tortoiseshell into a completely black cat....

Mary painted her shepherd, Bruno, and I think she did a lovely job.

My expectations for this project were fairly low - I really just wanted to be able to recognize what I painted as a dog. I was very excited when a couple of other folks could tell that I'd painted a German Shepherd. You know, considering the last thing I painted was the catiary, I think I did a pretty good job.

Maybe we'll try Kodiak next month...

Duncan is 6 years old today! We celebrated Saturday with cake, pressies and Aunt Mary.

Gotta make sure he gets every tidbit. Kodiak even cleaned the floor of the icing the big dogs left behind.

Belated Birthdays

My slackness in posting means I have a couple of belated birthdays to mention.

Mirabelle turned 14 in April. I can't believe we've been together so many years!


The kittens all turned 6 in April. Khar'pern, Parm and Per'la have certainly made life in the clowder a little more interesting.

Happy 7th Birthday, Reyna!

Today is my little girl's 7th birthday! Since her birthday falls on a weekday, we had a little celebration this past Sunday. The pups' Aunt Mary joined us for cake and photos.


Reyna was a very patient girl, tolerating her photo shoot with grace, dignity and tongue.



Kodiak, on the other paw, was very curious about the camera. Probably wondered why it wasn't focused on him...


We even managed to get everyone together for a family shot. I think this one turned out very nicely.
